We don’t usually associate mid-winter with chimney and fireplace maintenance, especially here in Charlotte and surrounding areas. Because of our cold winters, it’s typical for homeowners with fireplaces to have their chimneys inspected, swept, and ready to go before the heating season begins – normally as late summer gives way to early fall.
Now, an annual chimney inspection and sweep is the recommendation for most homeowners, which means that, if you had your chimney swept and inspected this summer or fall, you’re probably in good shape for the full year. However, there are some exceptions in which a mid-winter sweeping may be necessary.
Signs You May Need an Additional Chimney Sweep
Are there times when you need more than one chimney sweep per year? You bet. Here are some signs that may indicate that a mid-winter sweeping’s in order:

- Smoke in the Room. Blockages can disrupt ventilation and keep your chimney from doing its job. Blockages can come from outside in forms like animal nests, leaves, and twigs (particularly if your chimney cap is in rough shape). Blockages can also take the form of a creosote, a dark, combustible substance that accumulates in your flue as wood burns. Bad ventilation is dangerous, and blockages also increase the risk of chimney fires. So if you’re seeing smoke, it may mean you need a mid-season sweep.
- Strange Noises. Most any noise that comes from your chimney is probably a strange one! So, where would they come from? Sometimes birds and small animals can make their way into a chimney seeking shelter from predators or the elements. If you hear scratching noises, you may have a trapped animal. This can cause damage, blockages, and inhibited use of your chimney, so give us a call to keep your chimney running as safely as possible.
- Strange Smells. The need for a sweep can appeal to senses beyond your eyes and ears. Your nose might tell you too. Animals can create odors, and so can old creosote and moisture. All of the above are enemies of a well-functioning chimney, so call a sweep if something smells fishy…or musty…or otherwise unpleasant.
- Increased Fireplace Use. If you enjoy using your fireplace a great deal, it’s possible that an additional sweeping is warranted.
If you have any concerns about your fireplace or chimney’s condition or performance, we’re always ready to take your call and address them. Prompt care can save headaches (and dollars) down the road – and, of course, there’s no reason to live with uncertainties or diminished performance when our team is knowledgeable and ready to help.
Are Winter Chimney Sweepings & Repairs Possible?
While our weather doesn’t reach the extremes that some regions do, people still wonder whether poor weather, cold temperatures, and icy conditions can adversely affect our work – or whether mid-season fireplace repairs will impact use.
While each client’s needs and situation are weighed individually, typically mid-winter repairs and sweeping aren’t an issue. Some tasks do require particular weather conditions. For instance, there are ideal temperatures and moisture levels for masonry to cure or be sealed. Yet, sweeping services and most repairs can be handled year-round.
If you have chimney concerns, keep in mind that delaying repairs can worsen the situation. If you reach out promptly, we’ll evaluate the situation and determine a timeline for repairs that makes the most sense to protect your home.
I Forgot My Annual Chimney Sweeping This Year – Is it Too Late?
We get it. Life gets busy. If you didn’t get a sweep on the books before the burning season started, you may be tempted just to wait it out until next year. Yet, having your chimney swept as soon as you can is recommended.
…having your chimney swept as soon as you can is recommended.
This is especially the case if you’re noticing problems, but even if you aren’t, keep in mind that some issues can be present even if not readily detectable. Don’t wait for trouble to become evident if you can head it off early!
Getting your mid-season sweeping may also give you a good opportunity to think ahead and get next year’s sweeping on the calendar well in advance.
Between Chimney Sweeps: Keeping Things Clear
Your practices impact your chimney. Inspections and sweeping are cornerstones of good chimney care, but between chimney sweepings, here are a few things to keep in mind.
First, if you have a wood fireplace, make sure that all you burn is well-cured wood. Wet or green wood generates more smoke as your fire struggles to burn efficiently. In turn, you’ll build up soot and creosote more quickly if your wood isn’t very dry. Store your firewood well, and don’t be impatient about letting it cure. And never burn treated wood or non-wood items in your fireplace, as this can be extremely hazardous.
Another boon to fire efficiency is clearing out ash regularly. During burning season, leaving a small layer of ash can be helpful, but too much can block oxygen to your logs, resulting in an inefficient burn that will not be as clean as it could otherwise be.
Be attentive to any noticeable issues, such as those listed above. If you see exterior blockages such as birds nests or built-up ice, don’t hesitate to call.
